Biography
D. T. Ames was born in Vershire, Vermont, about 25 miles north of the Vermont/New Hampshire border, near the town of Hanover, New Hampshire.
Ames first took lessons from an itinerant penman named Professor Lyman, around the age of fifteen. He was studying at Chelsea Academy at the time. The following year, he took lessons from O. W. Smith and began assisting him in teaching penmanship.
